The four of us rented the house for our first vacation in Tuscany. The house was exactly what we had expected – from the owners’ description as well as the reviews. The drive up was a little nerve breaking, but it totally worth it once you get on top of the hill. The view is to die for – absolutely amazing! Luisa and Colin are very friendly hosts. We felt absolute privacy while staying at their guest house. The house was very clean and well equipped. We had everything we needed.
It is about 20 minutes drive from the Leaning Tower in Pisa, 20 minutes drive to the center of Lucca and 30 minutes drive to the beach (marina di Vecchiano).
We felt that we made a very good choice by staying at this property and will definitely recommend it to our friends. It was an amazing vacation and we hope that one day we will go back. Thanks Luisa and Colin!

Owner’s Response: A real an absolute pleasure and thank you so much for your kind words!
We have completed the construction of a brand new swimming pool. In addition to the new pool, we have have added a new hard wood decking area around the back and sides of the pool. The work is of the highest quality and done in complete sympathy with the surrounding olive grove. In fact, for the the poolside shower we have it coming out of one of the olive trees! The decking area is raised and the views out over the surrounding countryside are simply spectacular. There are sun loungers, a shade gazebo and also a table and chairs for evening drinks. It is a roaring success and guests thus far all love it. It also has a very natty blue underwater night light which makes for a stunning night swim under the stars – spectacular! We are very excited about this as it is truly a superb additional facility to our offering.
Sun and Tranquility
My family loved our stay in this charming house in Tuscany. This is a great location to visit Lucca, Pisa and other small towns. Beach is nearby and it is nice. Surrounding countryside is very peaceful.
House itself is clean and welcoming. Bedrooms are spacious and newly decorated. Furniture is nice and bathrooms are new and clean. One has a shower and other one bath. Patio outside adds to the house. The are two units side by side and it is good for larger families to get both properties. We had a nice family next to us and spend many nights enjoying the outdoors. Our hosts live on the property , next to the rental and are available for help if needed.
The view from the house is amazing. Be sure to have a good car since the road to the house is quite steep and needs a car that can get up the hill.
I would recommend this property for its location and charm and the owners!!!
Luisa was very prompt and responsive when we inquired about the property and the booking was very easy.

AUTUMN EVENTS IN THE VICINITY
Every September and October, Pisa Cathedral hosts the by now well established and highly esteemed Anima Mundi – a month long celebration of ‘musica sacra’ from around the world. Given the majesty of the cathedral; it’s sheer size, unique acoustics and famous history, a more fitting setting for music with a sense of the infinite is difficult to find. Additionally, visiting Pisa and it’s environs at this time of year is wonderful for the late summer/early autumn weather and changing scenery – it is a spectacular time of year and perfect for a weeks stay at La Lucertola. We still have October vacancies so don’t miss out on this enervating and magical time of year.
Autumn in Tuscany is a busy time on the land with the grape harvest set for September in the excellent nearby vineyards of Montecarlo di Lucca. This means their Vino Novello will be available for tasting and purchase from early November. It is the time when the weather cools down, the spectacular autumn colours become visible and those wonderful breezy elemental days begin to make themselves felt.
For us here at La Lucertola, we are making preparations for our own olive harvest. This involves cutting the grass around and under the trees which making the laying of the nets much easier. We also give the trees a light advance prune which allows us to climb into the heart of the tree and give them a good shake! Usually the picking begins in the second half of October and runs until early November. We take the olives in small batches of about 200-300kg to the local press in Caprona. As we state on our own olive oil label, ‘lovingly hand picked by friends and family’. It is an occasion for all, guests included should they wish, to enjoy this wonderful and ancient experience in a hands on way. People have been picking and pressing olives for thousands of years and they are truly one of the centre-pieces of Mediterranean culture. By becoming involved in the picking one connects to this ancient and vital tradition.
In November, the truffle harvest takes place in nearby San Miniato. The black truffles of San Miniato are prized the world over and attract visitors and buyers from near and far. The restaurants adjust their menu’s to take advantage of this gift of nature and truffles infused dishes abound. Wonderful!
The views out the windows and from the terrace out front are spectacular
First off, I would like to point out that I don’t like writing reviews that just say “Everything was just wonderful” as I don’t think those types of reviews are very helpful to anyone. That being said, Colin & Luisa have made it virtually impossible to find fault with anything with regards to our stay here. The laneway up to the place has some wicked switchbacks which made us smile and laugh every time we went in and out. The directions provided to get to the house were perfect and we literally drove right up to the car parking area straight away. We were warmly greeted by Colin & Luisa who showed us around the house and the grounds. The pride of ownership in this place is very obvious as the house was very clean, newly decorated and well maintained. The views out the windows and from the terrace out front are spectacular and the pictures here just can’t convey that. You have a grand view over the town of Pisa and the surrounding valleys. The house is perfectly situated for day trips to Florence, Pisa & Lucca. Venice and San Marino are an easy three hour drive away and we did day trips to both of those places while we were here. The weather was cool at night and warm in the day time and the house was always comfortable with an automatic heating system on a timer. It is only a ten minute drive to various shops and grocery stores which was really convenient. The owners have a son the same age as our son and they played together for hours which they both enjoyed. This particular hill that the house is on has a very interesting history from WWII and there is still a bunker in the hillside about 30 meters up the hill from the house (cool!). We stayed three different places while in Italy and although this place was about half the price of the place we stayed at the week before, all three of us agreed that this was by far our most most favourite place and we would definitely stay here again if we found ourselves travelling back to the Tuscany region. The house we stayed in is perfectly set up for a family of four or two couples. The owners have another rental place right next to the one we stayed at so if you had a larger group you could rent both places. If you do stay here you have to check out the castle ruins at Ripafratta which is only about a kilometer from the house. Amazing! There are also hiking trails all over the hills behind and around this place. I would advise having a car if staying here but there is a bus stop at the bottom of the hill.
Well, we gathered our next batch of 300 kilos and it delivered us another 40 litres of spectacularly tasty and peppery olive oil. Simply the best!
After the harvest of the olives comes the pruning of the trees above the houses. We want to bring another 5o 0r so trees into production. Behind the houses are trees that up until now have never received a prune. We moved here in 2002 and set about working the land nearest to the houses. This we have now accomplished and we have over 150 olive trees in good working order. For this to happen they need to have the right form which is somewhere between an open umbrella, without the material, and a weeping willow tree. This allows for the fruit to hang low in long cascading tendrils around all the tree. This ensure maximum light and easy picking. To get to that point requires some sage pruning and careful selection of which branches to keep and which to cut. It is part art and part science and all lovely.
Coming to stay next week are four volunteers from the Wordwide Organisation of Organic Farmers – known as Wwoof! Great name. These guys are staying with us for about 20 days and will be helping us with the tree pruning and land clearing to help us reach the total of 200 good trees. We aim to go forward at the rate of about 50 or so extra trees a year until eventually all of them on the land are capable of producing good olives. A wee little cottage industry is being born!
